Store and pack properly
- so that your goods stay in good condition and you don’t have any unpleasant surprises.
Check your storage unit. Omavarasto storage units are dry, tidy, warm and are equipped with good climate control systems. The doors open and close smoothly. You should never store your goods in a cold container, for example. The dampness caused by condensation can make your goods unusable in only a few months. Because of fire safety reasons and authorities’ regulations, a garage is not suitable for self-storage.
Draw up a list of the packing materials needed. For example, paper, bubble wrap, tape, lining, covers for mattresses and for furniture, cardboard, dust sheets, and packing boxes are usually needed for packing.
Fill boxes to capacity. Boxes which are only partly filled or over-filled may tip over or collapse. Heavy goods such as books and tools should be packed in small boxes which are easy to handle. Wrap fragile goods in a protective covering such as bubble wrap, and store them on top in your storage unit.
Label boxes clearly. Draw up a list of labelled boxes so that your goods are easy to find when you need them later on.
Organize your self storage unit carefully. Leave some free space around the contents to improve ventilation. Put protective sheeting or cardboard on the concrete floor under the goods, and don’t position items so that their weight rests on the outside walls. If you take goods from the unit frequently, remember to leave enough space to get your things out easily. Use all the space available including vertical space, and put frequently-needed goods near the door. To increase security, store electronic devices and household appliances at the back of the unit or behind a large item of furniture.
